A year ago, I took a leap of faith and officially launched Brooke Garwood Media. Starting this business was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying, but looking back, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. As I celebrate my first year in business, I’m reflecting on 12 lessons that each month of this adventure has taught me. Whether you’re a fellow creative, a business owner, or simply curious about the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, I hope these lessons resonate with you.
1. Start Before You’re Ready
If I had waited for the “perfect” time to launch, I’d still be waiting. Starting Brooke Garwood Media taught me that clarity comes through action. The process of building my business has been the greatest teacher.
Takeaway: You don’t need to have everything figured out to start. The first step is the hardest, but it’s also the most rewarding.
2. Consistency Builds Confidence
Showing up consistently, even when I doubted myself, made all the difference. Whether it was posting on social media or delivering for my clients, the act of showing up helped me grow my confidence.
Takeaway: Success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built on small, consistent actions.
3. Your Network is Your Net Worth
Some of my best opportunities came through connections. Collaborating with other creatives and leaning into relationships opened doors I didn’t even know existed.
Takeaway: Don’t underestimate the power of your community. Building relationships is just as important as building skills.
4. Progress Over Perfection
I spent way too much time tweaking things that didn’t need to be perfect. A project I deemed “good enough” ended up receiving glowing reviews.
Takeaway: Done is better than perfect. Perfectionism can hold you back more than it helps.
5. Set Boundaries Early
Learning to say no was a game-changer. Setting clear boundaries with clients and for myself helped me avoid burnout and stay focused on what mattered most.
Takeaway: Boundaries aren’t just important; they’re necessary.
6. Celebrate Small Wins
In the hustle of building a business, it’s easy to overlook the progress you’re making. Taking time to celebrate small wins—like landing a new client or completing a project—kept me motivated.
Takeaway: Every step forward is worth celebrating.
7. Ask for Help
Running a business can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Asking for help—whether from a mentor, peer, or professional—made a huge difference when I felt stuck. I made the step to hire out a virtual assistant and it has been a game changer for me.
Takeaway: You don’t have to do it all alone. There’s strength in seeking support.
8. Trust Your Instincts
Some decisions are best made by trusting your gut. From choosing clients to creative direction, leaning into my instincts usually led to the right choice.
Takeaway: Your intuition is one of your greatest assets. Trust it.
9. Not Every Client is the Right Fit
Saying no to a project or client felt scary at first, but it’s necessary to protect your time, energy, and creativity. Aligning with clients who share your values makes all the difference.
Takeaway: It’s okay to say no. The right opportunities will align with your goals and values.
10. Stay True to Your Vision
It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap, especially in the creative industry. Staying focused on my unique strengths and vision helped me create work I’m proud of.
Takeaway: Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Your vision is what makes you stand out.
11. Invest in Yourself
Whether it was upgrading tools, taking a course, or outsourcing tasks, investing in myself and my business was always worth it.
Takeaway: Growth requires investment. Pour into your business and yourself.
12. Gratitude is Everything
As I look back on this year, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. For my clients, supporters, and everyone who’s been part of this journey—thank you. Your encouragement and trust mean the world to me.
Takeaway: Gratitude keeps you grounded and motivated. Don’t forget to thank those who support you.
Looking Ahead
As I celebrate this milestone, I’m excited for what the future holds. I have big plans for Brooke Garwood Media in the coming year, and I’m so grateful to have you along for the ride. Here’s to another year of growth, creativity, and connection!
